Divorce And Its Social Impact On Family And Friends

by Irish Schlesinger

Life changing differences in the legal and financial statuses of the people involved in a divorce are expected by most when they embark on the path of divorce. The social repercussions of divorce, on the other hand, is somewhat less understood in society. It is not only the two people getting divorced who are impacted by it, but their family members and friends as well. Some such factors are discussed below.

The social and emotional impact of divorce on the two getting a divorce

Divorce is a process that isn't easy for all the parties involved because the effects can be devastating. For those couples that are presented with the marriage breakup, they are required to handle a variety of emotions. These include anxiety, sadness, anger, guilt, weariness, worry, low self-confidence, frustration/disappointment and loneliness. Often, relations are very strained between the spouses before, during, and also after the divorce process. Those close to the divorcing couple may also experience some identical feelings as well!

New responsibilities and roles have to be filled by the divorcees. This is particularly the case of women who may be forced to think of themselves as both mom and dad. Occasionally, the mother may have to find work in order to maintain the children. Such stresses manifest themselves. There are studies which have revealed that divorced persons are more likely to abuse alcohol and also other drugs.

What effect does divorce have on the kids?

The parents divorce leaves the children most affected. Despite the fact that the kids are in no way to blame, they are pulled in different directions by the tension between their parents. With the parents already facing their own emotional problems, they tend to somewhat turn a blind eye to those of the kids. This in turn makes the kids feel as if they are no longer wanted or loved. The kids may end up with a negative attitude towards one or both of their parents, if such a situation is not handled with love and care. Sometimes, siblings get separated as a result of the divorce, and that is also very difficult for the kids to adjust to.

It is not uncommon for kids whose parents are undergoing divorce to struggle with their studies, since they have too many other things on their mind. Children whose parents are divorced are noted to be more prone to participate in negative behaviors and attitudes. Sometimes, the children might even start to experiment with drugs as an easy way of dealing with their emotional stress. Seeing their parents bitter relationship can result in the children having a generally negative view on the institution of marriage itself.

Social stigma for the family

Society as a whole tend to frown at divorced couples. The respect that the couple enjoyed when they were married may be greatly affected. The divorced couple will also probably be faced with some awkward questions from their relatives. Friends and even relatives are often forced to stand with one of the two spouses. This results in even more relationships being lost by the divorced couple, and life for them changes even more than expected.
