Staying Married May Not Be Too Easy

If a couple decide to divorce, this decision also has a major effect on their friends and family. In one instance, the once settled family life is thrown into turmoil, and everyone who knows and loves the couple has divided loyalties. One only has to take a peek at divorce statistics to realize that more and more couples are parting company. Surprisingly, this applies even to those who have been married for several years.

Statistics state the majority of couples who separate end up getting a divorce. Another interesting point is that on the whole, younger couples tend to go their separate ways than older married couples. Couples who are thinking about divorce find themselves under immense pressure. After all, their family life will change forever.

People who are about to divorce will often feel insecure and vulnerable. This is compounded by the fact that several couples need to sell the family home to make ends meet. Take a moment to think about all of the couples that are married at this particular time, and then consider that about 5 percent of these are considering divorce in any given month. Divorcees are vulnerable to stress and depression, and many feel isolated.

Studying divorce statistics shows that couples who separate get divorced within twelve months, yet around ten per cent of couples who part and then reconcile remain married. Although it may sound appealing to be free and single again, but divorcees are more prone to suffer from chronic ill health, and divorcing could even shorten their life expectancy!

The American divorce rate started to rise rapidly during the 1960s and 1970s, but by the time the mid-eighties had arrived, the divorce rates had hit an all-time high. In the late 1980s, fewer couples were divorcing and today divorce rates in the USA are low, compared to some other parts of the world. According to divorce statistics, divorce rates are much higher in various countries in Europe.

It appears that close to two thirds of all American adults have been married once or more, but around 33% of them have parted or divorced. When American law was amended and divorce was made easier with the introduction of the no fault divorce law, naturally this made divorce far easier. When the no fault divorce law came into being many couples quickly took advantage of it.

It appears that many couples separate because they have financial worries. Approximately just over one third of couples who have a low income part company, but less than a quarter of couples who have a much larger annual income end up getting divorced. Divorce rate is low among college graduates. Still, when divorce occurs amongst two spouses who both have been well educated, then it is most likely that the wife will initiate divorce.

Read divorce statistics and there is evidence that one's geographical location may have a bearing on the likelihood of ending up divorced. Couples in Northeast America get divorced more than those in the Midwest and south. Also, according to divorce statistics, couples who wed at a young age are more likely to part, and out of all the couples who married between 1945 and 1955 roughly thirty eight percent will now be divorced. All in all, divorce statistics are interesting.
