Ohio Public Divorce Records

by Claire Dowell

If you are looking for Ohio Divorce Records, you can head to the state's central repository which is at the Office of Vital Statistics, Ohio Health Department. All divorce files since 1954 up to the present date can be found at the department. All the files are sent to them but they do not accept any application of divorce because that is the task of the county clerk of courts.

Since divorce records are not filed directly at the State Health Department, the department cannot issue certified copies of the records. They are only allowed to provide a copy that is abstract in form with particulars that prove the validation of a divorce. An abstract copy includes the name of the husband and the wife, their birthdays, date and place of divorce, and others. Particulars that are confidential are kept hidden from the public and can only be viewed by the husband, the wife, their respective lawyers, and other parties as specified by law.

There are certain fees in accessing the records at the Health Department or at the Clerk of Courts which are payable by check or money order. The fees vary depending on which county the records are from, what kind of request is chosen, and how much information you provide. If you can provide more information about a record, it will be retrieved faster and you will pay less. If you are unable to provide more information, expect that the retrieval process will be longer and will cost more. It usually takes around 2 to 3 weeks to process any request, and in some cases, it may take longer than that.

The Office of Vital Statistics of the Ohio Health Department has an official website. An application form can be downloaded from that website. The form has a divorce record section that needs to be filled-out accordingly with particulars such as names of the husband and the wife, and the date and place of the divorce if known. All procedures specified by the Health Department or the Clerk of Court that is taking care of the records should be followed step-by-step or else the application will be rejected.

The documents can also be obtained from online search tools. There are search tools that enable you to search all the states in the United States if you are not sure which exact state to do a search on. Do a little research on various search tools first so that you will have an idea if users have a positive feedback on them or not. They have the consent of the court to disseminate such documents, so there is no need to worry about legality issues.

If you are not knowledgeable of the exact state to look for the files, there are service providers that are capable of letting you perform a nationwide search. Such service providers maintain a database where they keep Records of Divorce. She database are inter-connected with the database of other states. If you just follow the steps correctly in searching for divorce files, you will have the search results instantly.
