This is why the state of California has implemented an online database which manages the public records of the state. The official certificate would contain the name of the couple who got separated as well as the date and the place where they were granted the separation. However, there is some important information that is kept away from the public to respect the privacy of the involved individual. This includes the reason for the separation and any financial related matters such as property and the custody of the children.
For records which have been registered since 1962-1984 the cost would only be $13. However, other records may have different service fees since the records can only be obtained at the county where the divorce was filed. In July 1, 2003, the government has declared that request will not be processed if the sworn statement of penalty or perjury is not signed.
The office of the Vital Records Section does not provide certified copies of the divorce paper. One can only get a certified copy at the county court where the separation was made legal. If one does not know where the couple got legal separation, one can check with the Vital Records Section and they may be able to direct you to the right county. One can send a mail request, however the sworn statement under penalty of perjury has to be signed and notarized. Without it, the request may not be processed. Instead of going to the office to file the request, one can request for the record at home.
