New York Marriage Records Database

by Claire Dowell

It's called The Big Apple, The Metropolis, and The City that Never Sleeps; it has many nicknames. But no matter what it is called, the City of New York is an interesting place to be. You'll meet a lot of people there, all from different backgrounds and cultures. You might even meet your possible lifetime partner, as there are a lot of famous love stories that happened in New York. This is one of the reasons why the state has drawn simple rules for obtaining public records. No matter how simple they are, though, you need to know the proper way of accessing New York marriage records.

New York's Department of Health is the office or agency tasked to manage the state's marriage records. Applications for request should be addressed to the Certification Unit of the office's Vital Records Section, which hold copies of records dating back to 1881.

One request or copy of the record costs $30. You should also be prepared to submit a completed request form. However, you will be issued a genealogy copy if the bride and groom are deceased and the dossier has been on file for 50 years. The standard fee for each copy is $22, although this can change according to the length of the period searched.

For marriages that happened in Albany, Buffalo, and Yonkers, the procedure is a little different. Instead of filing your request at the Department of Health, you should go to the city where the marriage took place. Then you will need to submit your request to the City Clerk's Office, which is usually found at the City Hall. There is a fee of $5, but this amount can change from city-to-city. You will find marriage records that were filed from 1880 to 1907 in these offices.

In most state and government offices, requesting for access to public records can take days or weeks. Although this is understandable because these offices get loads of requests every day, it still won't do you any good if you need the records at the soonest possible time. If this is your case, you should look for an alternative solution - and this is what you will find in online record providers.

Hiring the services of an independent online record provider is your best option because their online database is as comprehensive as databases can be. Additionally, you can access it 24/7. All that you have to do is enter the search parameters and you'll get results in a matter of minutes. And you do not have to spend for every marriage license you need; you pay it one-time only. The amount is quite minimal, too. In exchange for this fee, you get to enjoy unlimited access to their database. So it's the best and only way for you to go!
