California Free Divorce Records

by Ben Kingsley

Many of the states in the US are open. This means that the residents of each opened state can request for a copy of any of their personal documents. California is among the opened state that has allowed its residents to access their personal files when they have a need for it. Divorce records in California are one of the documents that can be accessed by its residents.

When marriage is no longer working and the couple thinks it is no longer a healthy relationship, they end up filing for divorce. It is very important to document such proceedings to make the separation legal. By making an official document of the couple's divorce, the document can then be used in legal matters such as doing transactions with the government. There are certain transactions that would call for a copy of a divorce certificate; these transactions usually involve the finances of the couple such as insurance and the assets of the couple. Without the certificate, it may be difficult to proceed with any requests. Another use of a divorce certificate is to get married again. Divorcees who wish to remarry have to provide a copy of the official divorce certificate before they can be allowed to remarry.

Just like any other divorce records in the country, California divorce certificate would contain the details about the couple's separation. One would know when and where the separation was legalized. The document is not complete without the complete names of the couple and some personal details as well as information on their marriage. However, a public document only has the basic information. Details such as the reason for the separation are kept private along with the division of properties and assets of the couple and the child custody.

There are several things that should be kept in mind when planning to request for a copy of a divorce certificate. The document is only released if the one who requested it is the divorcee himself or their immediate family. It is important that the requesting individual can provide details about the separation since it will be used as reference when conducting the search. Furthermore, the requesting individual has to provide their contact details on the request form since it will be used to verify the relationship to the person on the file.

Unlike many states, the state of California does not release a copy of a divorce certificate through the office of the Vital Records Section, only the county Clerk of Supreme Court can. The state office however, can verify some information for you and can tell you where the document can be requested. Sadly, the verification process cost $13 only. The retrieval fees may vary on where the request was made. The state office accepts mailed in request but the results of the search can be sent back only after a few days since it was requested.

To hasten the search process, one can request for the document online. This is way faster and hassle free since there is no need to go to any office just to file the request. Some websites even lets the users search for a copy of a divorce records free of any fees.
