More married couple now files divorce if their marriage is no longer working. The requesting individual is also required to provide their contact details because it will be used to verify one's identity since the state only releases the document to the divorcees themselves and their immediate families. Others can still access the files of other people if they can secure an authorization to access it.

All of New York's public documents, including the divorce records of the state are kept at the office of the Department of Health under the Vital Records Section. One can personally go to the said office to file the request from there. In cases where the state office cannot provide the requested document, one can seek help from the office of the county clerk where the separation was legalized and see if they can help you with your search. The state office also accepts mailed-in requests but this is not the fastest method in obtaining such document as it can take days or weeks if there are problems with the given search parameters.
