Indiana Divorce Court Records

by Claire Dowell

When the marriage of a couple is no longer working out, the best way to address the issue is to have a separation, also known as divorce. Most of the states of the country have increasing numbers of divorce case. This is the reason why such cases are documented and can be accessed by public. The state of Indiana is one of the states that have allowed its residents to access the Indiana Divorce Records.

Many would request for divorce records to update their family history. Although, divorce files are the least important files in genealogy research compared to birth and other related files, it still can cause issues in the future if it is not updated. It is also one of the files that are being checked by those who are suspicious of the marital status of their partners. By checking out the divorce records of their partners they can ensure that their partner is legally separated.

One has to know about the details of the divorce in order to get a copy of it. Information about the separation should be indicated on the request form in order to proceed with the search. By providing the necessary information, it can make the search easier and faster.

In Indiana, only the office of the county clerk can provide the certified copy of a divorce record. The office of the Vital Records Section of the Department of Health cannot provide such documents although they maintain and archive the files. The processing fee differs depending on where the request was done.

Going to the office of the county clerk is probably the old fashioned way of obtaining the document. Nowadays, the search can now be done even without going to the county clerk office. Calling the office instead of going there is now possible. This is also the best option to choose especially if one is not sure of which county the separation has been granted. One may need to call the office of the Department of Heath to verify the county and then call the correct county after it has been verified. Another method is to send a mail request to the office of the county clerk. One has to include the payment on the mail through a money order or a check payment. However, the wait time of both methods may take a while, a maximum of 14 days just to get the result of the request.

Using the Internet is the best method to choose if one does not know where to find divorce records in Indiana. With this method, there is no need to visit any office nor waste time in dialing or writing the mail order since the request can be done straight at home using a computer. The result is then displayed in just a matter of seconds from the time it was submitted.
