New York State Divorce Records Free Online

by Claire Dowell

The number of divorce cases since the 19th century has increased significantly. The freedom of Information Act (FOIA) required that the divorce documents should be publicly accessed by the local citizens. New York is one of the cities in the United States which have their own collection of records. The Vital Records Office of New York stores the New York Divorce Records.

Public divorce documents can be retrieved in two forms: decree or certificate. The divorce decree contains the separation term which is signed by the county's local judge for legality. The divorce certificate includes the details of the separation such as the time, place and the people involved like witnesses and attendees.

Unlike other documents that can be obtained from the Office of the Vital Records, an approval from the Supreme Court is needed in order to get a copy of the divorce documents. The document has to be requested from where the divorce has been granted. Several requirements are needed to get a copy of the certificate when you are requesting it in New York. One would be asked for identification together with a good reason. A processing fee of $10 would be asked when requesting for a record that is dated before 1963 and $30 for records starting from January 1963.

The common reason why the records are being requested is for moving to a different location or if they want to marry again. Gathering this document has to be done at the New York Vital Records Office. One will be asked to provide basic divorce information such as the bride and groom's full name, place where it was filed, birth date of both parties and the date of divorce.

The Divorce record can be requested via mail for those who are living outside the county where the couple was legally separated. A check payment can be sent to the New York Vital Records Office. This option may take a longer time mainly because of the distance.

Luckily, because of the emergence of the internet, divorce records can now be pulled out faster and because of this more are now using this technology to gather the information that they need. The information can now be retrieved immediately via the internet when the correct information is provided. Divorce court records can be accessed when you log on to the Official New York state website. It has all the details about the separation so there is no need to travel and go to the place where the divorce was granted. So it can save you time and effort in retrieving the data.
