New Jersey - Divorce Records Search

by Claire Dowell

New Jersey divorce records have been made available to the local residents of the state since the Freedom of Information Act has been implemented. This allows the people of the state to easily gain access to their personal files which they can use for whatever reasons that they need it the document for.

There are several reasons as to why people would request for a copy of their divorce record. Genealogy research is one of the reasons but it is not the top reason unlike birth, marriage and death records. It has little information which can be used in updating the family record. One of the common reasons for the retrieval of such document is to conduct a background check on the marital status of an individual. This is usually done by people who have doubts about their partners. They want to make sure that the person they are dating does not have family of his own yet or if he does one, he/she has been legally separated from them. This can save them the hassle and delay if they have plans of marrying.

One would know about the details of the separation through the use of this document. The complete name of the couple who got separated along with the information as to when and where they got separated is documented on the file. A public file, however, would not divulge the reason of the separation as well as the division of properties in order to let the couple have a sense of privacy.

Retrieval of the document can be done through a mail request. The order has to be sent to the Clerk of the Supreme Court. All of the necessary documents have to be included on the mail request. This includes the accomplished application form which has the name of the involved couple, date and place of the separation. The reason for requesting such document has to be indicated as well to have the request processed.

Requesting for a divorce record in New Jersey entails a certain charge. It only cost $10 for the retrieval fee. The payment has to be enclosed on the mail order in the form of a check or a money order. Retrieval of the record would usually take a minimum of 10 days to a maximum of 4 months.

The wait time has been greatly improved with the use of the Internet. The search can now be done even without leaving home and the results are displayed after a few seconds. There are several websites which allow their users to conduct a free divorce records online search. This allows the user to test the system before they decide to pay for the retrieval of the document itself.
