It's interesting how in many areas of life we see law enforcement, lawyers and courts as enemies that can make our life worse. In the case of Divorce however, things are not so simplistic. When it comes to Divorce, you may find out that your attorney is the only "friend" you have during the process. And it's a tough, arduous and sometimes painfully long process. Or at least it feels that way.

Let's be frank, the courts system is not always fair. The rulings truly are often quite unfair. On the other hand though, it is possible that you might be satisfied, or at least ok with the judgement. You do not know in advance whether yours will be a horror story or a rather decent result.

The only thing you can do is to focus on your mental focus around the whole thing. You have to realize just how little control you have over the outcome. A lot of it has to do with pure luck and sheer randomness. It will depend on the lawyer you were assigned, and it will depend on whom your spouse hires as an attorney. You want to hope for the best, but also be mentally ready for a bad outcome.

I am not saying you are completely powerless and without any control. There is one thing you do have control over, and that is the attorney you hire. The difference between two attorneys can be rather humongous in terms of results. The exact same divorce, with the exact same court can end in two alternative endings worlds apart. Just because you hired a really great attorney versus a rather lackluster one. Please don't underestimate this point and get lazy on the attorney choice.

This is one area where you can't afford to "cheap out". You can't afford to experiment with a less experienced newbie attorney and they spend the rest of your life depressed about how badly your divorce worked out, wishing you had handled it better. So do it right from the get go!
